ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Since high school I’ve been working with poetry and, since the age of 26, I’ve sculpted. Large parts of forty years, three sons, and full-time work, was lost to creating much formal work in either poetry or sculpture, (although those years were very busy!) I’m so grateful that in the years remaining, I have the opportunity to devote the time and energy that each art form requires. The sense of “flow”, when you are deeply immersed in the process of creating, is wonderful.

This is such a beautiful poem, Angie. I love how you start out solemn and sad and heartbreaking, but then end on such a poignant, positive note. I can feel your unconditional love for Bobby with every word that you chose to create this piece. A love each one of us yearns for and deserves. My favorite lines are his eyes as “pools of sadness,” how you are “feeding him love through your eyes,” and “we dance with darkness, wild and electric, in the deepening twilight.” To me, the power of this poem is that no matter what happens, the two of you stand as one and are ready to fight together. Beautiful!

    Angie,
Thank you for sharing such a personal piece of writing, for letting the reader feel the heartbreak of illness for both the sick one and the one who loves him. To be a witness to this disease, to me, is an act of love. You have an eye for discovering the truth in each moment–whether in the darkness or in the light–and that is beautiful.
